Time Well Spent
Time Well Spent Funny thing about time, it feels endless until one day, it’s suddenly gone. That was my experience two days ago when I pulled into the parking lot of my work and suddenly realized my direction, my purpose, my research, everything was being taken away from me. Who am I without my syllabus, assignments, professors, and colleagues? For a moment I began to weep out of fear and loneliness until I remembered the words of Julie Olsen Edwards who reminded me that fear of the unknown is scary but, “You can’t wait until you know enough, we never know enough” (Laureate, n.d.). She is correct, and one thing is for sure, I am relentless in my early childhood efforts. Further, still, I will not go quietly into the night, but instead, I will dive into next week with the knowledge: 1. I am not alone. I have the skills and relationships to build a community of practice that will become the springboard for tomorrow’s all-incl...

Our scores yielded the same results when scoring ourselves. Like you, one area I would like to improve my communication skills is when dealing with confrontation. I tend to stammer, fumble on my words and second guess my stance in these situations. Confidence is a skill that is built on experience as well as positive feedback in other communications situations. In confrontation, since I am so trusting, I feel others are trustworthy as well. This isn't always the case...unfortunately :/
ReplyDeleteYour post helped me to self reflect a bit more and to realize similarities in our results. I feel confident in my scores and I hope you do as well :)
Lynnette,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your blog post. I also had my husband and a co-worker fill out the surveys for me. Our scores for ourselves matched each other. I, too, scored a mild level for communication anxiety inventory, moderate for verbal aggression, and group 1 (people-oriented) for listening styles. I am also not a confrontational person. I steer clear of drama and avoid those kinds of situations. However, being in the early childhood educational field it is inevitable that I will have moments where I must confront a parent or a colleague when we do not see eye to eye on a certain topic or child. "To communicate effectively and appropriately in today's world, you must possess an understanding of and appreciation for people who perceive others differently than you do. It's also important to understand the way your unique background affects your perceptions" (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, 2015, p. 43). Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
