"Atypical" is a stunning representation of the importance of language beyond that of nonverbal as individuals diagnosised with Austistic Spectrum Disorder may not have the capacity to read or express nonverbal cues. Hence, it is crucial for early childhood professionals to develop strong, non-judgemental, and purposefully relationships with children and families. Why? Just because a child isn't looking at you when you're talking to them, doesn't mean they're not listening.
